Winterizing!

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Well, we’re in the process of getting ready for winter, because it’s definitely just around the corner!  Haven’t had a big snow yet, but it’s been pretty chillllly lately!

My accomplishments for the weekend were getting rubber stall mats in the horse stall (9 of them!!) and putting up a half-wall to block Noreasterly winds.

The floor of the stall is concrete, which is bad for horsie legs.  (If any of you have stood around on concrete for long periods of time before, you know what I’m talking about!)  But since the girls don’t ever go in there, I haven’t been in a big hurry to get the stall mats in.  With the cold weather upon us, though, I feel better knowing they have a comfy place to get out of bad conditions if they want to.  I also have a dry place to feed them when the weather is wet and miserable.

The stall is quite large and completely open to the east, so I put up a plywood wall on the north half of the opening so they can get out of the wind when it comes from the northeast (it’s quite a bit windier here out in the open than it was at our old place).  When warmer weather comes again, I will go ahead and paint it brown to match the rest of the barn.

Here are some pictures of the improvements to the horse stall:

Another nice thing about the setup here is that there is a concrete slab for their water trough (no more muddy mess) with an electrical socket just on the other side of the fence to plug the trough heater into.  I put the heater in a couple days ago before it dropped into the teens at night, and the darn thing doesn’t work anymore.  Tested the electrical socket, and it works fine.  So I had to pick up a new one today.  Hopefully I will get it installed tomorrow.

And here are some shot of the girls, fat and sassy and sporting their winter woollies.  I think they look happy and relaxed:
